Europe, France, Poulleau and Berthaut after Foucherot and Hilair; Poulleau and Berthaut after Manzarri, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A detailed etching depicting the Temple d'Auguste a Mylasa - the Temple of Augustus at Mylasa (today Milas) - in Asia Minor with several staffage figures sitting on the steps and in the surrounding landscape as well as the temple's plan below with nice renderings of the columns' bases and composite capitals. This image was created for "Voyage Pittoresque de la Grece" by the Comte de Choiseul-Gouffier (1782 1st volume, 1809 2nd volume, 1822 3rd volume, 1842 2nd edition). Comte de Choiseul-Gouffier was a member of the Académie française and the Choiseul-Gouffier family, French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1784 until the fall of the French monarchy and a passionate scholar of ancient Greece. Milas (or in ancient Greek Mylasa) was the seat of the district of the same name in southwestern Turkey. The region has a rich history and its remains, the territory of Milas district contains a remarkable twenty-seven archaeological sites of note. The city was the first capital of ancient Caria and of the Anatolian region in medieval times.
