Description:

North America, USA, ca. 1834 CE. $5 gold, 1834, classic head, plain 4. XF 45. Size: 0.9" W (2.3 cm)

This coin is from a fascinating period in early American numismatic history. Production of the $5 gold coin began on July 31, 1795 - the first gold coins ever struck in the United States. Today, these coins are very scarce, as most early US gold coins were melted down due to a wide difference in exchange rate of gold and silver between the USA and European markets, mainly because of the silver quantities being extracted from Latin America. For example, over 40,000 USA Half Eagles were melted down in one day in 1831 in Paris.

Provenance: private Toluca Lake, California, USA collection; ex-Berk
