Description:

Western Europe, Germany, ca. 18th century CE. A fabulous cast carbon-steel executioner's sword. The thick handle is densely wrapped with twisted steel wire and is topped with a spherical pommel decorated with a trio of striated ovoid panels. The slender hand guard has bulbous tips and intricate scrollwork centered on each side and has a central slit through which the top of the blade is housed. The elongated blade exhibits shallow grooves below the guard on both sides, sharpened edges, and a rounded tip which still retains its sharpness. A small maker's mark in the shape of a "P" is stamped onto one side of the blade, and fine patina envelops both handle and blade. Size: 9.7" W x 41.5" H (24.6 cm x 105.4 cm); length of blade: 32.375" L (82.2 cm).
