Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 17th century CE. This Tibetan thangka depicts Jataka Tales - Sakyamuni Buddha after having reached enlightenment and various scenes from his previous lives. The rendering of the artwork does not rely heavily on contour lines as do later period paintings. There is a distinct painterly quality to the figures and landscapes. Jataka Tale is an important subject for a Thangka painting. Size: *Overall dimensions 45" x 24-1/2" (114.3 cm x 62.2 cm) - dimensions of the actual painting 29" x 19" (73.7 cm x 48.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Bricker Collection acquired in the Labrang Monastery region, Xiahe in the mid 1990s.
