Eastern Europe, Russia, probably imported to Alaska, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A forged-iron adze used for splitting and shaping wood that was an important item in the fur-trading business between Russia and Alaska. The adze head features a teardrop-shaped socketing shaft, a thick shoulder, and a sharpened vertical edge, and hafted through the verso is a lengthy wooden handle with a slightly narrow lower end. Irons tools and weapons like this example were not able to be transported over land due to their weight, so Russian traders would transport them via waterways between eastern Russia and western Alaska. Size (adze head): 6.7" L (17 cm); (wooden handle): 21.25" H (54 cm)
