Description:

Western Asia, Persia (Iran), Safavid Dynasty, ca. 17th century CE. A gorgeous, classic example of a kashkul, cast from brass with two dragon-headed terminals and a boat form. The sides are decorated, below the rim and along the lower body, above the disc-shaped foot. They are finely engraved with a dense pattern of arabesques and cloud bands. The upper register has a shallowly engraved band of nasta'liq (Persian calligraphy) between two meandering vines, inscribed with Persian verses. An ornate brass chain allowed this item to be carried; it was traditionally used by Dervishes to collect alms. Size: 13.25" L x 5.4" W x 5.75" H (33.7 cm x 13.7 cm x 14.6 cm)

A similar example sold at Christie's London on April 17, 2007 (Lot #112) for GBP 5400 (approximately USD $10000 at the time).
