Description:

Near East/Western Asia, Turkey, Constantinople, Ottoman Empire, ca. 17th century CE. A finely preserved, forged-iron axe head of a broad form known as a bardiche (also berdich). The bardiche consists of a wide, crescent-shaped blade head with an acutely pointed terminal on either end of the sharpened edge, a narrow neck, and a cylindrical socketing shaft in front of a square butt. Inscribed on one side of the blade is a prayer to Allah, and the other side bears a prayer to Muhammad. Lustrous iron patina covers the entire weapon and makes for a sumptuous presentation. The minimalist design and condensed inscriptions suggest this bardiche blade was used as a weapon of war rather than one forged with ceremonial contexts. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 12.375" L x 6.25" W (31.4 cm x 15.9 cm)
