Description:

Southeast Asia, Laos, ca. 17th century CE. A fine, bronze cast Laos Buddha. Sculptural representations of the Laotian Buddha, like all those of Southeast Asia, are dressed with an "antaravasaka" round the hips, and an "uttarasanga" draped like a monastic coat. In this example, the "sanghati" a long fold of cloth, pleated on the left shoulder, is most evident. Buddha's eyes are lowered giving the impression of contemplation. Hair is represented as small pointed curls. Also characteristic of the Laos Buddha, the arms are long, with all the fingers of both hands of an equal length; the ears are elongated with huge lobes, which do not fall vertically but rather arch outwards at the tips making for a concave representation. This example is depicted in a sitting position and Buddha is pointing towards the earth, calling on nature to help him in his conflict with Mâra (death, demon, god of desires). As is characteristic of Laotian Buddhas, he does not possess an Urna or third eye on the forehead, and his ushnisha is in the form of a minimal spiral that resolves in a point, representing the spiritual intensity of the Buddha. A bit of history on Buddhism in Laos - Buddhism was introduced to Laos as early as the first millennium CE, but was not widely practiced until the late 13th century. Buddhism was established as the state religion by founder of Lane Xang (1353-1371) but the worship of animist spirits continued to predominate for centuries. By the 17th century, Buddhism had begun to be taught in schools in Laos. 4 1/2" H x 2 1/8"W x 1 1/2"D. Provenance: Ex-Dr. Charles Smithen Collection, Ex-private Palm Beach, Florida collection.
