Description:

Western Europe, France or Italy, ca. 17th century CE. A forged-iron parrying dagger with a modern tang protruding from beneath the U-shaped hand guard. The blade is of a lengthy triangular form with a prominent midrib flanked by sharpened edges. The curved hand guard features two curved quillons surmounted with trapezoidal terminals. Swordsmen would carry their normal sword in one hand - typically their right - and a dagger like this example in their left. When an opponent swung his sword, the wide quillon would be able to catch their blade and render it ineffective for long enough to counter with a thrusting blow. Size: 13.9" L x 2.7" W (35.3 cm x 6.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
