Description:

Western Europe, Italy, ca. late 16th century to 17th century CE. An impressive forged mace of rare form with a square rod that becomes tubular near the fancifully embellished cap. Its intricate cap features a rounded top, 5 raised vertical bands forming loops on each end, and 5 rectangular spikes that widen and flatten as the project outwards. Covered in a lovely russet patina, this iron mace head is also composed of 40% copper, which graces it with a lustrous sheen in areas. A simply striking example from early modern warfare! Size: 14" L x 3.375" in diameter (35.6 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: ex Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
