Description:

Southeast Asia, Tibet, ca. 16th century CE. Gilded bronze Maitreya Buddha seated in the posture of bhadrasana, the posture of benevolence, on a throne with both legs pendant resembling the western or European manner of sitting, feet resting on a support. His lips are painted with red lacquer; his hair is piled up in a high coiffure with blue pigment and a cintamani (a flaming pearl) on top. The statue bears a double vajra inscribed on the bottom, indicating its use as a object of worship; such inscriptions were made after calling the deity into the statue, perhaps inserting written prayers or relics, after which it was sealed. Maitreya, 'the Buddha of the future', is believed to be the one who will take the place of the historical Buddha Sakyamuni. He waits in the tusita heaven for the moment he is to appear on earth as the Buddha of the fifth world cycle. Maitreya is oftentimes depicted as a Bodhisattva, as he is regarded as one of the dhyani-Bodhisattvas, the actual creators of the universe. In the future Maitreya will be like Sakyamuni, a mortal Manusi Buddha who lives on earth for a while in order to teach mankind the doctrine and to guide them to the path of Buddha. Maitreya, 'the loving one' is an important and popular deity who is widely worshipped in the Himalayan regions. Measures 4 1/4" H.
