Description:

Western Europe, Rhineland, ca. 16th century CE. An impressively intricate, free-blown glass roemer, or chalice, of a light aqua hue with a coiled applied base, attached to a tall and wide stem with applied divot clusters that form grape bunches. The stem rises to the cup with a tooled trail encircling the connecting area. The walls gently swell outwards and then come to a smoothed rim. The deep interior cavity reaches to the bottom of the stem with a small kick. Roemer glassware was named in part to honor the Romans who brought glass-blowing and grape cultivation to the Germanic people during the 4th century CE. The characteristic blue-green color comes from the type sand found in the Rhineland. Roemers continue to be made today, are still adorned with green stems, and are painted or etched with vines. Size: 2.5" W x 5" H (6.4 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Martin Wunsch collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces. Restoration using three glass pieces of orange color. Old inventory label on base. Surface wear, nicks and weathering commensurate with age. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Silvery iridescence throughout.
