Northern Europe, Dutch, Renaissance, ca. 1420 CE. A single leaf from a breviary manuscript, handwritten in Dutch on vellum. There are twenty-two lines of beautiful calligraphic text with several large initials in red and blue - along with select words in red. The piece is matted and set in a glass-fronted, gilded frame so that both sides of the page can be viewed. A breviary (Latin breviarium meaning abridgment) is a book that contains liturgical texts - daily service, official prayers with psalms, readings, and hymns recited at specified hours of the day; it is also called the liturgy of the hours.
