Description:

Europe, Medieval Period or later, ca. 12th to 16th century CE. A beautiful cast silver pendant, roughly diamond-shaped, with ornate edges and two relief scenes, one on each side. One depicts the Holy Family; the other a scene on a boat, perhaps referencing Matthew 8:23-27, when Jesus calmed a storm at sea at the behest of his terrified disciples. This would have been a treasured item, and speaks to the importance of Christianity in the medieval world. With a loop for suspension and a silver ring through it. Size: 0.75" W x 0.9" H (1.9 cm x 2.3 cm); 1.4 grams

Provenance: private L.S. Farrow collection, Colchester Borough, UK, acquired between the late 1970s and early 1980s
