Description:

Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 12th century CE. An exquisitely carved stone temple section featuring a magnificent garuda emerging from the finely delineated foliage of the entablature, with countless curled leaves and several lotus blossoms arranged in a wonderful symmetrical composition. Garuda is a mythical bird who serves as the Hindu god Vishnu's vahana (mount). Here he is portrayed with characteristically bulging eyes and hooked beak - and is highly decorated with a grand necklace, armlets, earrings, and an elaborate headdress. An outstanding example of Khmer artistry rivaling that of Angkor Wat. Size: 18.25" W x 13.8" H (46.4 cm x 35.1 cm)

A grand marvel of engineering and architecture was founded in Angkor by Indravarman who reigned from 877 to 889. Century after century, a line of kings diligently continued the construction of temples and palaces in Angkor, with Angkor Wat arguably being the most spectacular. It became an awe-inspiring complex within a grid of canals and reservoirs. Each Khmer king erected a temple mountain at the site and also featured his personal deity - either Shiva, Vishnu, or Buddha - on top. In addition, the king gave his god a part of his royal name. This suggested that the king himself was a manifestation of the god. Upon the king's death, according to Khmer belief, the deity reabsorbed him. Since he had been the earthly manifestation of the god during his lifetime, the Khmer worshipped his image as one with the deity. This practice is similar to the deification of a ruler in societies such as pharoanic Egypt.
