Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 15th to 17th century CE. An enormous agate dzi (also spelled gzi) bead with a striking white on chocolate brown decorative pattern throughout, comprised of three registers of geometric motifs. The central register features concentric circle motifs in a honeycomb-like matrix pattern, while the two flanking registers feature concentric circles with scalloped borders that also house concentric circles. Double striations border each register, and a single concentric circle motif adorns each end of the bead. For non-Tibetans, genuine dzi beads are made of agate, with sharply delineated patterns, symmetrical shapes, strong color, a glossy surface, and no flaws in the design. Ethnographic interviews tell us that to Tibetans, genuine dzi beads must also be free from defilement and possess amuletic powers. Size: 4.875" L x 1.375" W x 2.625" H (12.4 cm x 3.5 cm x 6.7 cm)
