Description:

Central/Western Asia, Afghanistan, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A beautifully painted example of a deep bowl composed of earthenware, its interior and exterior coated in thin, colorful glaze. A brown ibex - symbol of power and virility - is in tondo, surrounded by floral swirls and motifs, set inside a dark brown border with a wavy vine-like line painted inside it in darker brown. The exterior features a thick band of incredible turquoise glaze above another thick band of white glaze; this coats everything, including the foot, where you can examine the almost glass-like surface of the glaze particularly well. Afghanistan's ceramic tradition was inspired by nearby Iran and particularly trade with Nishapur and Samarkand, but had its own unique flourishes. Urban centers like the Islamic city of Shahr-i-Gholghola produced vessels like this one. Tragically, the Mongol invasion of ca. 1220 - which also destroyed Nishapur - laid waste to that city and put an end to much ceramic production. Size: 7.25" W x 3.25" H (18.4 cm x 8.3 cm)
