Description:

Western/Central Asia, Islamic / Persian, Seljuk culture, ca. 12th century CE. A gorgeous hand-built pottery bird figure standing with fused legs atop an integral discoid plinth. The bird exhibits a stocky body with folded wings, a puffed-out chest, a tapered neck, and a crescent-shaped tail projecting from the posterior. The raised head features a pair of almond-shaped eyes, a petite conical beak, and a projecting crest on top. Lustrous turquoise-hued glaze envelops the entire avian figure, and areas of applied black pigment accentuate the feathers, chest, tail, eyes, and crest. A fabulous and attractive example of Seljuk artistry! Size: 7" L x 4.25" W x 8.1" H (17.8 cm x 10.8 cm x 20.6 cm).
