Description:

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. This iron pendant is shaped like Mjolnir, the legendary hammer of Thor, the Norse god of thunder. It features a gently pointed head with a handle that tapers to a suspension loop. The surface is stamped with a popular Viking metal decoration: a triangle with a central raised pellet dot. These motifs were created by applying a punch to the surface shortly after casting or forging. The pendant is strung on a modern cord with a lobster clasp, making it wearable as a necklace, though it can easily be restrung on a chain. Size of pendant: 2.2" L x 1.5" W (5.6 cm x 3.8 cm); cord: 21" L (53.3 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private W.P. collection, since the 1990s, acquired on the German art market
