Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Southeast Asia, Thailand or Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 11th to 13th century CE. An adorable and rotund pottery vessel in the form of an elephant, the howdah mounted on the back forms the spout. This likely was a piece for daily use and functioned as pot for storing lime, a lime paste was used to make a chew from Betel nuts, which is a common custom in southeastern Asia (and still is today). The surface is molded in high relief and decorated with incised lines to give the impression that it is dressed in finery and wearing a bridle. Elephants played an important role in the Khmer Empire and revered for their intelligence, strength, and size and were special mounts for royalty and soldiers during warfare. Size: 6.5" L x 6" W x 6" H (16.5 cm x 15.2 cm x 15.2 cm)
