Description:

Central Asia or Iran, Samanid, Nishapur, ca. 10th century CE. An impressive pottery bowl of conical form on a short ring foot. Boasting a lustrous burnish above a creamy white glaze, the interior of the beautiful dish is embellished by a single black striation that starts at the rim and stretches nearly all the way to the basin. The shimmering white glaze similarly adorns the exterior of the vessel, however it stops about 3/4 way down the body to leave red clay of the bottom of the bowl bare, creating a wonderful contrast in both texture and color. A stunning example from ancient Nishapur! Size: 9.5" in diameter x 3.75" H (24.1 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Toluca Lake, California, USA collection, acquired June 14, 2002; ex-Malter Galleries, Auction 80, The Gluck Collection, April 7, 2002, Lot 122
