Description:

Northwestern Europe, England, Medieval to Post-Medieval period, ca. 10th to 18th century CE. A collection of 4 iron horseshoes and a large fragmentary piece, the 4 intact examples are in the classic semicircular form with pierced perforations for attaching with nails to the hoof. Thick tabs terminate at both ends and a central protrusion, or toe caulk, is welded to the center of several. The surfaces are well worn and have developed a rich dark brown patina. Having properly fitting shoes was crucial for protecting the horses' fragile feet, which led to the popular phrase among blacksmiths: "No foot, no horse." Size: 5" L x 4.75" W (12.7 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
