Description:

East Asia, Korea, Koryo (Goryeo) Dynasty, ca. 918 to 1392 CE. A beautiful cast-bronze mirror with a square form and relief character inscription. The verso of the mirror is framed with a raised border and has a central perforated tab, which stylistically stems from the shape of stem and loop buttons. Next to the button tab is a rectangular border surrounding the inscription. The frontside is flat and free of ornamentation and was originally highly polished as the reflective surface. Mirrors were invaluable pieces for dressing, but were also believed to reflect the soul, and were often buried in tombs. Inscriptions on mirrors usually contained morals or narratives, to remind the gazer of their faults and improve their character. A beautiful bronze mirror that has developed an attractive green patina! Size: 5.25" L x 5.1" W (13.3 cm x 13 cm)
