Description:

South Asia, India, Tamil Nadu, late Chola, ca. 10th to 13th century CE. A leaded-bronze statuette depicting the child Tirugnana Sambandar in a dancing pose atop a pedestal. This figure is often confused Krishna dancing as a child known as Balakrishna; however the main difference is the lack of butter balls, and the pointing forefinger shown here- this hand gesture symbolizes Sambandha's recognition and devotion to Shiva. Sambandar, also known as Thirugnaana Sambandar, was a Tamil poet, saint, and one of the most prominent Nayanars (devotees of Shiva) in the 7th century CE. He composed hymns in praise of Lord Shiva and played a significant role in the Bhakti movement of South India. Size: 2.3" L x 2.3" W x 5.5" H (5.8 cm x 5.8 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired in Santa Monica, California the early 1990s; ex-Art dealer P. Pamaspry, Singapore collection
