Description:

**Originally Listed At $2500**

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Oaxaca, Zapotec culture, Monte Alban, Phase III, ca. 500 to 700 CE. An evocative pottery incensario in the form of the head of a zoomorphic deity - likely Cocijo or the Plumed Serpent - wearing a flared headdress that serves as the bowl. The fierce god narrows his brow as he gazes forth via huge eyes above a projecting, beak-like nose and an open mouth with protruding fangs. A pair of lightning bolts flank his cap, rising from a plumed coiffure and sizeable earspools, while a basal knob and caruncle sit above his nose. The verso is embellished by 3 openwork crosses: 1 on the back of his head and 2 on the headdress. Size: 8" Diameter x 5.5" H (20.3 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-Robert & Marianne Huber collection, New York, USA

  • Condition: Professionally repaired with restoration and repainting in areas. Light surface wear with nicks and abrasions. Loss to part of lightning bolt on right side. Indentation on headdress suggests a glyph was previously there. Otherwise, excellent with nicely preserved details and liberal remains of black pigment.
