West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. early 20th century CE. A well-carved wooden divination staff or magic tapper, depicting a kneeling female figure holding her breasts. Nude save a tall, pointed headdress, she faces forward with a contemplative gaze comprised of large, thick-lidded, diamond-shaped eyes with low relief pupils, a naturalistic nose, and pursed lips. Wonderful patina commensurate with age. Size: 12.25" H (31.1 cm); 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand.
