Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, Ogboni society, 19th century CE. A pair of iron staffs in abstract but recognizable human form. Each figure has a stylized face with long, braided hair, elongated torsos with round designs at their chests, exaggerated genitalia, and small legs and feet. They stand atop long, thin iron pins. These figures usually come in male-female pairs, so these two male figures are probably from separate pairs. They are called "Edan" and are emblems of membership in the Ogboni society. Size: 1.25" W x 12.75" H (3.2 cm x 32.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
