Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Near East / Central Asia, likely Yemen, Bedouin culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beautiful silver-copper necklace (54% silver) with a tubular pendant at the center known as a taweez or hirz which may have been sealed with a paper prayer or sacred verse inside. Paisley and pomegranate blossom shaped charms dangle and tinkle lightly, and the capsule pendant is suspended from intricate chains. Hirz amulet pendants are worn in many cultures throughout the Near East and into Southeast Asia with Islamic, Jewish, and Hindu-Buddhist influences. Yemen's geographical position between India and Africa created cross-cultural contacts, which greatly influenced Yemeni jewelry, but in Yemen the hirz was typically worn as part of a woman's wedding garb. Size of pendant: 3.3" L x 0.65" W (8.4 cm x 1.7 cm); strands doubled: 27" L (34.3 cm); silver quality: 54%; weight: 78.5 grams
