Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerican Formative Period, Guerrero State, Mexico, Xochipala culture, ca. 13th to 10th century BCE. A wonderfully realistic ceramic portrait of a seated woman, nude aside from large earrings and hair ornaments. She leans back on one hand, with her legs crossed at the calf in front of her; her other hand is raised, her mouth open, as if she is in the act of speaking. The woman may be pregnant, and the details of her body are amazingly lifelike, with dimples and folds carefully portrayed. Size: 4.2" W x 6" H (10.7 cm x 15.2 cm)

Xochipala figures, while rare, are noted for their naturalistic poses and attention to detail, despite their early date in the Mesoamerican ceramic tradition. Unlike the Olmec, who seem to have deliberately abstracted human figures, perhaps to remove them from the quotidian world, the artisans of Xochipala seemed intent on creating the most naturalistic representations possible.
