Description:

Europe, Romania, ca. 1942 CE. A brass shell casing fashioned into a fine example of trench art. In low relief around the main part of the body is a haunting scene of soldiers at war in a desolate landscape, with bare trees and a large cross dominating the landscape. Around the top are raised letters, reading, "AMINTIRE DIN RAZBOI," "Remembrance of war." Around the bottom, cut into the side, are the words, "Octombrie 7 - 1942 LUCRAT [made by] CHRISTACHE ANTONESCU." The bottom quarter of the shell is tightly corseted; below that is inscribed, "LEMBERG ROSTOV," probably indicating that this was made in Rostov, Russia, north of Moscow, site of a major battle in World War II. Size: 3.4" W x 13.45" H (8.6 cm x 34.2 cm)
