Description:

Europe , during The Great War - 1914-1918. Two large 75 mm artillery shells converted from weapons to art. Finely decorated, one reading "Alsace", the other "Lorraine" - both with a lovely rendering of a tree branch. Originally part of the Holy Roman Empire, Alsace-Lorraine was the territory ceded by France to Germany in 1871 after the Franco-German War. This territory was retroceded to France in 1919 after World War I - a provision of the Treaty of Versailles, was ceded again to Germany in 1940 during World War II, and once again retroceded to France in 1945. Today the region is known as "Bas Rhin" or Lower Rhine in France. Add these to your collection and add a remarkable piece of history to your life! 13-1/2"T x 3"
