Europe, France, World War I era. A pair of brass artillery shells that were transformed from tools of death into commemorative flower vases by a soldier who undoubtedly spent many days deep in a muddy trench. Both vases were hand hammered and embossed with blossoming branches as well as boldly delineated 1917, VERDUN, and 1918 amidst a stippled ground. During the battle of Verdun, fought between February 21 to December 18, 1916, the French parried a German offensive attack. Among the bloodiest battles of World War I, there were about 400,000 French casualties and about 350,000 German ones. A special pair of matching trench art vases that respectfully pay homage to this legendary conflict. Size: each measures 3.375" in diameter x 12" H (8.6 cm x 30.5 cm)

  • Condition: Both have minor indentations and age wear, but their forms and embossed imagery/inscriptions are still strong. Brass has developed a lovely rainbow iridescence that becomes casts a colorful glow when the vases are held to the light.
