Description:

Europe, France, World War I era, ca. 1918 CE. A tall, brass trench art vase created during World War I and decorated with informative text and imagery. The text reads "Company F - 21st ENGR" (Engineers) at the top; the date "1918" in repousse beneath; this text frames is a fine rendering of a castle or fortress. As you turn the vase, there is an image of a spread winged eagle (iconography derived from the flag and coat of arms of Lorraine) above the text "B. of L.E." (Bastille of Lorraine), and beneath this, the cross of Lorraine as well as an anchor. Beyond this rich iconography, so telling of this wartime moment, the composition of the design is beautifully planned to the very last detail. Note the scalloped 'trim' at the rim that frames five-pointed stars, the stippled background that unites all the elements, and the scalloped trim around the base that mirrors that of the rim. Meticulously crafted by a soldier, prisoner of war, or civilian in the vicinity of the conflict. Size: 13-7/8"H x 3-1/8" in diameter. Provenance: Ex-private Colorado Springs, CO collection.
