Description:

France, Somme River Valley, 1916. Between July 1 and November 18, 1916, Allied forces of France and Britain were locked in a bloody battle with German forces along the Somme River in northeast France. Britain alone suffered 60,000 casualties on the first day of fighting - its worst day of the entire war! This shell was transformed from tool of death to commemorative flower vase by a soldier undoubtedly spending endless days deep in a muddy trench. Hand hammered and embossed with SOMME along upper section. Shell stamped 1915 and clearly shows it was fired. 90mm by 8-1/2" high
