East Asia, Chinese, Eastern Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A large, green lead glazed pottery vessel of a bulbous body that gracefully narrows toward the neck, continues upwards resolving in a slightly wider rim, and stands on three delicate, angled feet. The elaborate relief designs including various animals, some with magnificent antlers, as well as kneeling and riding hunters armed with spears make this jar even more spectacular. Due to an extended burial period, the original green color has developed a brilliant iridescence that is only found on green Han pieces. During the Han dynasty, the most innovative technique was the development of lead glazing. These were low fired glazes colored with copper to attain the green hue, or iron to obtain a yellow or brown result. Given the toxicity of lead, such glazes were ideally suited for mortuary ceramics rather than those created for daily use. The spectacular form and iconographic program on this particular vessel suggests that it was interred with a very important individual. Decorative round wood stand.
