Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz, ca. 600 to 800 CE. It is incredible to think that Vincent Price, the American actor best known for playing a villain in early film noir thrillers and later Edgar Allen Poe inspired classics including '"House of Usher" (1960), "Tales of Terror" (1962), "The Comedy of Terrors" (1963), and "The Raven" (1963) collected Pre-Columbian art that also conjured the eery, frightening realm of the macabre! This Veracruz pottery mask is at once dramatic and bizarrely naturalistic with its heavy lidded, open eyes, veristic protruding nose, and realistic open, toothy mouth. One look at this visage brings to mind Mr. Price's distinctive voice featured in countless horror films not to mention Michael Jackson's "Thriller"! Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: mask measures 6" W x 6.25" H (15.2 cm x 15.9 cm); 7.25" (18.4 cm) high on stand.

Provenance: Ex - Allen Davis collection acquired at Price-Dewey Gallery, Santa Fe; ex-Victoria Price, ex-Vincent Price.
