Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze attachment in the form of a Gorgon's face, more comical and grotesque than horrifying - chubby-cheeked, with spiral-curled hair and a fanged mouth with the tongue sticking out. The Gorgon is surrounded by a border of snakes that emerge from the hair, set within a wide, rounded, raised border. The presence of the gorgon speaks to the Classical world of mythology; the concept of the gorgon, a frightening, beast-like, female creature, is at least as old as Homer and continued to be used as a monstrous symbol throughout the Roman period. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3.45" W (8.8 cm); height on stand: 2.25" (5.7 cm)
