Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya-Teotihuacan, Tiquisate Type, ca. 600 to 800 CE. An elegant and quite large, monochrome red-orange terracotta cylinder standing on three decorated squared legs, the body adorned with 9 applied rattles, each with incised "eyes" and slit opening that makes them each appear as faces. A vessel such as this was certainly used in ceremonial rites and would have been held in the users hands and shaken quite liberally to create a loud din. Combine this with other rattling vessels, pottery hand-held rattles, whistling vessels and hallucinogenic mushrooms and one can imagine the party atmosphere this would have created. Size: 10" L x 6.75" H (25.4 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010.
