Description:

India, Naga Tribe, ca. 1st quarter 20th century CE. One of the most beautiful examples of Naga beadwork we have handled! Fifty strands of small cobalt blue glass beads strung on thin fiber then attached to a macramé closure. The Naga are a fascinating group of approximately 17 distinct tribal groups who live in northeastern India and north-western Myanmar. They have a long-standing reputation as fierce warriors and were known to collect heads from enemies as late as 1969. This necklace would have adorned a Naga woman of wealth and was worn as a sign of prestige. Size: 24" L (61 cm)

Provenance: private Florida USA collection, acquired in the 1980's
