Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. early 20th century CE. An adorable mask resembling a short-snouted dog, hand-carved from hard wood and painted dark-brown. The mask displays bulbous eyes, a short nose, stylized whiskers as well as a slight smile, and an intricately-incised striated coiffure. An ovoid hole rests in the middle of the forehead, though no other holes for the eyes or mouth are present. Two lateral perforations and one atop the head are used for suspension, and the mask has a lustrous brown patina across obverse and reverse. Size: 6" W x 7.25" H (15.2 cm x 18.4 cm).
