Description:

Magna Graecia, western colonies, Archaic period, ca. 6th to early 5th century BCE. An elegant female figure, possibly representing the goddess Kybele (Cybele), mother of the gods, sitting with a straight back in a throne. Her arms extend outward in front of her and may have once held something based on their tight fists. She is dressed in a fine polos and chiton, with an applied round brooch at one shoulder (and a space for another on her other shoulder). Her coiffure has long locks falling past her shoulders. Nice remains of red and white pigment grace the piece. Terracotta figures like this one have been found in private dwellings where they may have been part of a shrine or had a religious purpose. Others decorated tombs and sanctuaries. Size: 4.95" W x 9.35" H (12.6 cm x 23.7 cm); 10.9" H (27.7 cm) on included custom stand.
