Description:

Western Asia, Neolithic period, ca. 2nd century BCE. A mace head, smoothly-carved from black hematite to display a teardrop form incised with a row of undulating circles. The bulbous mace head tapers at the neck, ending with a lipped rim at one end. The carved decoration of this piece suggests it may have served a ceremonial function, instead of bine purely for warfare. Size: 2" Diameter x 2.75" H (5.1 cm x 7 cm)

  • Condition: Surface abrasions and loss to one incised circle motif. Minor chips and nicks throughout, especially around hafting holes. Light, scattered mineral deposits. Nice luster and coloration to the stone.
