Description:

Native American/First Nations, western Arctic, Thule period, ca. 1200 to 1700 CE. A large, hand-carved adze, made from a large section of whale bone, with a blunt handle end pierced through for suspension on a tool belt or a wall and a broad, bladed edge on the other end. The Thule people primarily hunted sea mammals, and used a variety of manufacturing tools to create weapons, domestic items, and ritual sculptures. This included adzes like this one alongside bow drills and snow knives. A large adze like this may also have been used for hacking out ice and snow to create shelters. Size: 2.8" W x 10.25" H (7.1 cm x 26 cm); 10.7" H (27.2 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Great deep patina on surface. There is a large fissure from age and use on one side, but this is stable and does not threaten the integrity of the piece. Clear signs of use in the deep gouges at the sharper end.
