Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An elegant pair of 79% gold hoop earrings (equivalent to 18K+) formed from a thick loop that narrows at its ends with a tightly coiled terminus and a hook and loop closure. The Romans invented the "hoop earring", which developed around 300 BCE. These examples have been made wearable using modern solid 14K gold hooks and modern solid 10K gold rings. Size without hook: 0.65" W (1.7 cm); ancient gold is 79%, equivalent to 18K+; total weight: 3.5 grams
