Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A lovely necklace strung with dozens of marine Spondylus shells of various shapes and a carved stone pendant. Strung in modern times, these beads are wearable and tastefully arranged as a necklace on a wire with a lobster clasp. The petite white disc beads along the terminal ends gradually increase in size and then alternate between ovoid and large paddle or fan shaped beads with tan, pink, and light orange hues. At the center is a yoke-shaped gray stone that was hand drilled on the tips and linearly notched on the outer edge. The Colima culture practiced shaft tomb burials, and jewelry was often buried with the deceased to be used in the afterlife and Spondylus shells were a symbolic material of fertility and elite social status. Size (necklace strand): 26" L (66 cm); (stone pendant): 1.3" L x 0.3" W (3.3 cm x 0.8 cm)
