Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Nayarit, or Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An impressive ensemble of wearable art, including a lovely shell necklace comprised of twenty-six hand-carved danglers nicely separated via tubular spacers and a pair of flat, rectangular termini - the shells of blush pink, coral, and creamy white hues - as well as eight beautiful bird pendants. In the Pre-Columbian world, birds were regarded as sky animals associated with the sun, moon, and Venus - where they served as messengers between humankind and the deities. Of particular importance were the eagle, parrot, and hummingbird - endowed with supernatural powers of celestial origin. Size: necklace measures 19" L (48.3 cm); longest avian pendant measures 2" L (5.1 cm)

Provenance: private R.D. collection, Long Beach, California, USA collection, acquired over 25 years from various major galleries.
