Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northwest Coast Peru, Viru culture, ca. 100 BCE to 600 CE. An impressive pottery figure of a nude male resembling an owl, as he stands with unarticulated legs together atop petite feet and arms at sides, bending at the elbows like tucked wings. Capped by 2 peaks that recall owl's horns, his sizeable head features an avian-esque visage comprised of a prominent, beak-like nose, sizeable, widely spaced eyes, and a slender mouth, all flanked by a pair of pierced ears. Though his limbs are mostly undefined, the artist has taken care to depict other features, such as his delineated fingers and toes, risen nipples, drilled navel, and projecting genitalia. Size: 3.5" W x 8.7" H (8.9 cm x 22.1 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950 to 1960s
