Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Viru culture, ca. 300 BCE to 100 CE. A hand-built and highly-burnished pottery vessel with a rounded base, rolling walls, a decorative zoomorphic head, a tubular spout, and an arching strap handle. The avian figure resembles that of an eagle boasting an aquiline beak, circular eyes, a slender head, a raised curved ridge emulating a tucked wing on either side, and a petite tab-shaped tail with four incised "feathers" on the verso. The vessel is painted with a deep russet-hued slip, though faded slip-painted areas of cream and dark-brown decorative motifs are visible along the wings, handle, bird head, and spout. A gorgeous example from ancient Peru! Lucite ring display stand included. Size: 8.5" L x 6.375" H (21.6 cm x 16.2 cm).
