Description:

Northwest Coast, Tlingit, signed Moses Henry, ca. 1970s. A hand-carved wooden mask of a human face delineated with an expressive visage, openwork eyes, a relatively naturalistic nose with openwork nostrils, and a downturned openwork mouth with red lips. In addition, black paint was used to render thick brows and diagonal striations over one eye. See a mask with similar striations, though depicting a zoomorphic creature, in the collection of the American Museum of Natural History that was acquired by the museum in 1896. Size: 6.75" W x 9.75" H (17.1 cm x 24.8 cm); 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection, acquired from Catherine Thompson's gallery in Washington state between 2005 and 2007
