Description:

Oceania, Samoan Islands, ca. 1940s. A beautiful hand-carved wooden ceremonial war club with a smooth cylindrical handle that gently tapers at each end, carinated hand guards, and an elongated, diamond-shaped blade with a prominent midrib. In addition to this attractive form, the blade is embellished with a finely incised border of running stylized geometric motifs. Traditionally in Samoa, armament craftsmen have been highly-esteemed members of society who skillfully carved weaponry like this example with motifs that relate to the body art in their culture. Size: 18.25" L x 3.25" W (46.4 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection; acquired from the son of a serviceman who fought in World War II
